The Design Story

manchala

Manchala
This Manchaha rug is a tribute to a feeling we often forget to embrace—being carefree. Aptly named “Manchala,” which means playful, free-spirited, and a little mischievous, this rug captures the joy of creating without overthinking. Woven by Jumma, the lead artist, along with Mahendra and Jeewan, this trio shares a warm friendship on the loom. Jumma, an experienced weaver, guided the others, deciding the patterns and teaching them how to bring each design to life through knots. The rug began with net-like patterns, but soon, the weavers felt it resembled cages. In a beautiful, spontaneous shift, they added butterflies flying free, as if escaping the confinement. That moment set the tone for the rest of the rug: light, instinctive, and full of wonder. Jumma, who once lived near forests and rivers, wove in memories of his past adventures. At the heart of the rug is a close-up view of a water body, complete with water plants and swimming fishes. Surrounding it is the land, dotted with motifs inspired by fish skeletons! Artists find inspiration even in the most unexpected places. Manchala is a symbol of living freel, and allowing the heart to lead. A gentle reminder to let go, be present, and simply create, just as these weavers did.
