The Design Story
sangmitraSangmitraThis Manchaha is a story of two jails and one unexpected collaboration. The journey began in Ajmer Jail, where the bottom section of the rug was woven. The weavers there poured their hearts into the design—filling it with bold motifs with bright, cheerful colors. But midway through the weaving, due to unforeseen issues, the unfinished rug had to be shifted to Dausa Jail. Hariram, a Dausa Jail weaver, was the first to approach the half-done Manchaha. He stared at it for a few seconds, puzzled, amused. And then he burst into laughter. “Ajmer walon ne saari rangeen dhagey khatam kar diye!” (The weavers in Ajmer have used up all the bright colors!) Noticing that only soft, muted shades were left in the yarn baskets. Instead of feeling limited, he took it as a creative challenge. He invited his weaving partner Chotu to join him. Together, they added delicate patterns, gentle tones, and thoughtful details, creating a beautiful balance. This rug became a meeting point of two different worlds, woven by people who have never met, yet connected deeply through their craft. Hariram named this rug “Sangmitra,” a friend who brings people together.
