The Design Story
gaon ki sairGaon Ki SairLaxmi's Manchaha, "Gaon Ki Sair" (A Village Tour), is an invitation to visit her beautiful village of Kishanpura in Rajasthan. Woven during the monsoon season, this carpet captures the lush greenery surrounding her home. Situated amid agricultural fields, her house can only be reached on foot, especially during the rains when the fields and roads are often submerged. Laxmi's inspiration for this hand-knotted rug came from a vivid memory: heavy rains had flooded the village, turning the streets into rivers. She creatively depicted this by weaving an upside-down pot of water, saying the rain God's matki (water pot) dropped from the sky, and there is the depiction of the overflowing water covering everything, including a car attempting to navigate through the difficult path. This scene reflects an actual moment during her weaving process, highlighting visitors' challenges when reaching her home. Despite this, Laxmi finds a positive instance in the situation, believing that the walk allows guests to appreciate the beauty of her village a little more. In "Gaon Ki Sair," Laxmi intricately portrays her home, a single road leading to it, and the surrounding fields. She includes clouds pouring rain, small water bodies formed by the downpour, and mountains with streams at the top of the rug. This carpet is not just a piece of art but a blueprint of her village, lovingly crafted with the help of her daughters, Manisha and Nirmala. It represents their abode, their home, inviting everyone to experience the charm and tranquility of Kishanpura.
