The Design Story
golgappaGolgappaWhen Banarasi Devi got the chance to weave a round rug, her heart thought of the thing she loved the most ‘Golgappa!’ Golgappa, also known as Panipuri or Puchka, is a popular Indian street food consisting of hollow, crispy round dough balls filled with flavorful water and filling. With an excited heart, Banarasi started weaving the round rug with all the motifs she loved- she weaved different kinds of flowers, creepers, stars, and different round motifs. As she wove, she imagined that the rug resembled a Golgappa, with the diverse designs inside acting as the delicious fillings. She jokingly said that she has also woven the top part of the carpet in dark yarns indicating how she would break the Golgappa to add the filling. In the end, Banarasi was quite happy with her work as she said, “Wherever this carpet will go, it will fill both hearts as well as stomachs.”
