The Design Story
marusthal ki yatraMarusthal ki YatraDreaming of a journey is a journey in itself. As Poonam weaved this hand-knotted rug, she and her husband dreamt of their journey to a desert. That is what the carpet has been named after - “Marusthal ki Yatra” literally translating to “Journey of Desert.” Poonam’s husband shows her a painting of a desert. As they describe, this painting is a bird's eye view of a desert. Poonam took this as her inspiration and weaved the replica of the painting. Apart from the desert, she has weaved little hearts, Kalash, waves, boxes, and kaju katlis, their favorite sweet. Kaju Katli is a famous Indian sweet that is made in a diamond shape. This carpet has diamond-shaped designs on it. Her husband laughs over this saying that she would eat Kaju Katlis as she weaves them on her carpet. We also witness her husband being supportive as he happily tells us how he posted about the carpet on his Instagram which fetched him over 10K views. Poonam proudly admits that she never looked at a design while weaving. She would remember the designs, pick the yarns, sit at the loom, and weave on her own. This is why she enjoyed the process of Manchaha though this is her first one ever.
