The Design Story
raaheinRaaheinIn the stillness of their days, Budhan and Shahjid found movement in the smallest things. Unsure of what to weave, every day they used to weave different patterns on their hand-knotted carpet. The rug they wove holds many of these patterns, stacked and scattered like footprints across sand. The pattern keeps changing, but they always intermingle with the other designs. Two birds appear at the bottom. Rows of triangles walk forward and pause. A tree stands still while clouds drift past. One can feel the silence they sat in and almost hear their thoughts. When they finished the rug, the weavers said that it felt like they were walking across deserts, back to their villages, through old stories, into their own minds. With this thought, they named the rug “Raahein,” meaning “Paths.”
