The Design Story
prem haarPrem HaarThis Manchaha was woven by Hariram and Shanti Devi, a husband-wife duo who have spent many years at the same loom. They did not plan the design before starting. Like many times before, they simply began weaving and allowed the carpet to grow slowly between them. At the bottom of the rug, Hariram wove a large necklace motif as a small gift for Shanti Devi. When Shanti loved the design, he continued weaving more necklace forms across the carpet, as a token of love. Around these sections, the carpet slowly filled with quilt-like squares. Each block carries a slightly different pattern, as if small pieces of cloth were stitched together. Shanti Devi decorated the carpet in her own way. She added flowers, plants, and winding paths that move across the carpet. These details soften the geometry and bring life to the design. Years of working together have created an easy rhythm between them, as even though they never decide the design beforehand, their ideas somehow meet in the middle. At the end of the rug, Shanti Devi named the rug “Prem Haar” (Necklace of Love), accepting Haririam’s sweet gesture.
