The Design Story
aladdin ka chiragAladdin ka ChiragSusheela Devi began this Manchaha with leaves. Small lines that built the base of her idea. From there, she wove a large door in the lower section, with two windows on either side. She says the door is an invitation, asking the viewer to step inside the carpet. Above the door, she placed a bowl. From this bowl, colours begin to rise and spread across the surface. They move upward in flowing, organic sections. The forms are not rigid. They shift and blend, showing her confidence and mastery in mixing yarns. As the colours travel upward, she filled the spaces with tiny dots and small intricate motifs. These details add depth and make the surface feel alive. She named this rug “Aladdin ka Chirag” as the rising colours reminded her of smoke flowing out of ‘Aladdin’s Lamp’. At the same time, the name is personal. She recently became a grandmother, and her grandson’s name is Chirag. For her, the rug carries both imagination and affection, a lamp of colour, light, and new beginnings.
