The Design Story
pankhPankhSurji Devi has been weaving for years. She no longer plans her designs in advance. She sits at the loom and lets her hands move, trusting what comes naturally to her. Her sense of colour is instinctive. She spreads shades in a way that feels balanced and aesthetic. The whole rug comes together quietly like this. In this hand-knotted rug, she has woven an evening scene. At the bottom, the brown tones hold the ground. Above that, shades of blue open up into the sky. The shift is simple, but clear—you can feel the space change as your eye moves upward. Across the sky, small heart shapes turn into birds. Some are in lines, some in loose groups, all moving in different direction. It feels like that moment when the day is ending and everything is finding its way back home. There is no strict structure. Just a calm scene, built through colour and small, thoughtful motifs. With this, she named her Manchaha ‘Pankh’, meaning ‘Wings’.
