The Design Story
behti nadiBehti NadiSantosh Devi, a master weaver, taught the art of weaving to both her husband and her daughter, Chaina. This rug is a special creation made by Santosh and Chaina together. Though Chaina learned from her mother, she has developed her own style over time. In this rug, they divided the work with a bold zigzag. On the right side, Santosh wove scattered plant and diamond motifs in her traditional style. On the left, Chaina added her modern touch - clean, minimal, and flowing. They worked in their own sections, each staying true to their voice. But near the end, Santosh suggested they come together to weave one design at the top. Chaina agreed, even though she usually prefers working on her own. She liked the idea of creating something shared with her mother. At the top of the rug, they wove rivers flowing down from the mountains, full of mixed colors. Santosh believes that she and her daughter are two different rivers, and she is excited for her daughter to flow and find her own path. With this, they named the Manchaha “Behti Nadi,” meaning “Flowing River.”
