Afshar is a style of handwoven rug produced by the Turkic Afshar tribe. The Turkic Afshar tribe is a nomadic group initially located in the mountains surrounding the modern region of Iranian Azerbaijan. Since the 19th century, Afshar rugs and carpets have been renowned for their high-quality built, distinctive design, and eye-catching color scheme. The authentic Afshar rugs display saturated coloring techniques, and the lanolin-rich wool taken from their flocks gives them a brilliant sheen and durability. Afshar carpets typically have elaborate flatweaves at either end and multicolored selvages on the sides. The colors are usually bold, with deep indigo, carnelian, saffron, and ochre tones predominating.
