A globetrotter, watercolor illustrator and an interior designing enthusiast, Tatiana de Nicolay brings her collection of designer hand-knotted rugs reimagined as landscapes, taking the reader’s imagination a walk through Jardins du Monde- translated as Gardens of the World.
A Parisian designer, Tatiana de Nicolay is an artist whose passion is a marriage between her keen eye first as an embroiderer and her extensive travels across Egypt and India. Her keen eye for detail led her to explore embroidery under the tutelage of Jean Paul Gaultier, Manish Arora, and Tarun Tahiliani. After honing her skills in Paris, she transitioned to the world of interior designing at London. Her work is a fine blend of cultural elements that she observes over extensive travels.
Jardins du Monde Collection- A Collaboration of Artistry & Beauty
Her new collection launch with Jaipur Rugs takes inspiration from Albert Kahn, a Paris-based Architect’s Garden of Paris and takes you through a walk around imagined seven landscapes. Jardins du Monde translates to Gardens of the World and each rug in this collection is a stop that paints vivid imagery for the visitor to enjoy and indulge in the details. The collection consists of seven rugs as seven gardens around the world, a Japanese Garden, an English Garden, a French Garden, Forests and Meadows, a Labyrinth, Waterways and a Pagoda. Each of these rugs draws you into a different world, enough to urge you to travel along.
A watercolour artist and illustrator, Nicolay demonstrates a deep connection to nature in her work and tries to blend the artistry of craftsmanship with modern aesthetics through the hand-knotted rugs that help bring her imagination to life. The collection begins with a journey at the entrance of the Gardens of the World, making every stop a point of story-telling.
A Journey Through Imaginative Landscapes
Upon entering the collection, the first rug is The Garden Gate. The rug showcases a large wooden trellis decorated with bamboo leaves.

As you further walk into the Gardens of the World, the first stop is Japan. The rug here is called The Tea Pavilion, featuring plants, palm leaves and architecture of the land of the rising sun.

The walk continues and leads up to a poetic English garden with a natural and wild appearance, it highlights different species of polychrome flowers bringing alive the beauty of the floral rug, The Flower Meadow. A beautiful hand-knotted carpet that is bordered by a green trellis, features beautiful and lush colorful vegetation.

The walk further takes the visitor to waterways typically seen in English Gardens with a lush green trellis and climbing roses, the fourth designer rug is called A River of Roses.

Next, arriving at the tropical greenhouses between ficus and bermuda palm trees, pepper vines and undergrowth herbs, wandering through the dense and abundant vegetation, the visitor can hear the song of a Quetzal or the hiss of a tropical snake. This fifth rug in the collection is known as The Snake Song.

The Mysterious Labyrinth, the sixth rug is a place of unique richness from which a mysterious atmosphere emanates showcases climber vines which Nicolay believes would guide the visitor to the centre.

The final stop and the seventh rug in the collection, is A Country Gathering. This handcrafted rug is designed like a large draped tent that was once setup for the country lunches and is a stop-over to contemplate the gardens in good company.

In Conclusion
All the designer rugs speak of grandeur all while being the perfect ambassadors of the designer’s deep connection to nature. The collection highlights the delicate and joyful details through vibrant hues, motifs like hand painted branches and birds which we are sure are Nicolay’s forte. The collection allows us to also witness her cultural influence, her global presence and a deep connection with the art of design.
Nicolay creates works of art that breathe life into any interior spaces, perfect as pieces that can be a part of celebrations, memories and grandeur. The collection has been brought to life by the skilled artisans of Jaipur Rugs that gave life to Tatiana’s vision. A work of art, let the Jardins du Monde Collection be a part of your sanctuary as home decor rugs or even as wall tapestry, the choice is yours!
