The Design Story
mann ki raahMann ki RaahRukmani Devi weaves in a way that comes from within. After losing her hearing a few years ago, she began relying more on what she sees and feels. She often sits quietly at the loom, letting the design form in her mind before it appears in the rug. In this piece, the design builds slowly from bottom to top. The lower part feels dense and layered. There are layers of different patterns coming together and fading. She has woven a flower in the middle with geometric patterns. As you move upward, she has divided the rug into different sections. Diamond shapes, fine dots, and repeated marks appear in separate spaces. Each section feels different, but they are placed in a way that still holds together. At the top-most part of the rug, Rukmani Devi has woven clouds and rainfall, as monsoon is her favourite season. For her, this way of building comes naturally. She does not force the design. She lets it arrive, step by step, and follows it with her hands. When she finished weaving the carpet, she named the Manchaha ‘Mann ki Raah,’ which means ‘Path of the Heart’.
