What Handmade Actually Means

The word handmade is used so loosely it has almost lost its meaning. Here is what it means at Jaipur Rugs.

A hand-knotted rug is made by tying individual knots around the warp threads one at a time by hand. A single square meter can contain anywhere from 40,000 to 500,000 knots. A rug of moderate size takes months to produce. The artisan who makes it leaves something of themselves in every section of the work.

The result lasts 30 to 50 years. That is not a marketing claim. It is what this kind of making produces.

The People

Nand Kishore Chaudhary founded Jaipur Rugs in 1978 with the conviction that the people who make things deserve to be paid fairly for their work. At the time, the industry ran on intermediaries who took the margin and left artisans with almost nothing. He removed them.

Every artisan in the Jaipur Rugs network is paid directly for every piece they produce. More than 80 percent of them are women from rural communities who now have access to a global market and a livelihood that belongs to them. That model has not changed in nearly five decades. It has simply grown.

Working with Kengo Kuma, Tatiana de Nicolay, Richard Hutten, Matteo Cibic, Vinita Chaitanya, Ashiesh Shah, Kavi, and others. Each collaboration produces a limited body of work, where weavers who have spent decades developing the skill bring the designer's vision to life.

Tatiana de Nicolay's Jardins du Monde collection won the EDIDA International 2025 Floor Covering award, judged by 25 Elle Decor editors across their global editions. The only Indian brand on the podium.

Weavers given no pattern, no brief, and no instructions. Designing entirely from their own imagination. Whatever comes off the loom belongs entirely to the person who made it.
