The Design Story
sajawatSajawatKani Devi and her husband, Chote Lal, have been weaving together for many years. In this Manchaha, they worked the same way they always do — side by side, building the rug step by step. They filled the carpet with various mandala (full-circle) forms, inspired by rangoli designs made during the Diwali festival. Each mandala or half-circle is placed in a different part of the rug, like small centres of attention spread across the surface. The rug was woven during Diwali, and that feeling comes through. There are flowers and plant-like forms, along with diamonds and necklace patterns. These are shapes they often see in decorations and celebrations at home. Instead of one single design, they kept adding these elements one after another, making the rug full of different design patterns. The rug feels like a festive ground — full, decorated, and built with the same rhythm they share while weaving together. Together, they named the rug ‘Sajawat,’ meaning ‘Decorations’.
