The Design Story
freedom manchaha“Life is full of reflections,” say Vijay, Suresh, and Durga, inmates-turned-weavers of this rug from Dausa jail. They explain that time spent in jail demands one to question and reflect on their actions. This Manchaha, named “Mann ka Pratibimb” (Mind’s Reflections), embodies those very reflections. Each day, the weavers sat at their looms, surrounded by a whirlwind of thoughts, yearnings, and aspirations, all of which are woven into this hand-knotted rug. Just like their thoughts, the rug's design is intricate and abstract. The weavers shared that they wanted to weave whatever design came into their minds, which they found highly therapeutic. Taking weaving as a therapy in prison, the weavers hope that this rug passes on the same level of peace they received while creating it.
