The Design Story
rang birangi chidiyaRang Birangi ChidiyaOn a random summer afternoon, Yaadram found himself reminiscing about the majestic Banyan tree from his village. He shared that this tree was vast in size, lush green, and it used to house many birds. He remembered himself sitting on the platform of this Banayan tree and listening to the chirping of sparrows. Being locked in jail, he immediately yearned to visit that tree, but his limitations gave way to inspiration as he started to weave that tree in this Manchaha. “Rang Birangi Chidiya,” meaning “Colorful Sparrows” is an ode to Yaadram’s memories of this place and his village. He said that it had been so many years since he visited his village but the scene of the Banyan tree was clear in his mind: A strong Banayan tree stood tall in the middle of the ground where kids came to play Cricket, there was a river nearby with wildflowers all around, and a crooked road that led to his home. Yaadram painted this exact picture on his hand-knotted rug. He said that even when he sees a sparrow in the jail, it transcends him to the Banyan tree underneath the joyful chirping.
