Sometimes, we look for ways to style our home or jazz it up by adding small nuances. Area rugs are one such thing that people worldwide widely use to embellish their homes. A wide range of area rugs is available in the market, and they can be found in various colors and textures. People looking for class and quality prefer hand-knotted rugs to style their space. Being a significant home decor element for ages, area rugs define the room's energy.
Area rugs can be categorized on multiple bases. How they are constructed, the material they use, and their design create new categories. Therefore, to understand different types of area rugs, let's start with the bases on which they are categorized.
1. Based on Construction:
A. Handmade Rugs:
Handmade rugs are the highest quality rugs made by artisans using the age-old art of weaving. Handmade rugs are much more durable than machine-made rugs. The time taken to weave one handmade rug is much longer than machine-made rugs. However, they guarantee impeccable durability and textures that are unparalleled. Handmade rugs are seen as a sign of luxury and are also considered an investment passed on from generation to generation. Various handmade rugs include hand-knotted, hand-tufted, flat weaves, etc.

B. Machine-made rugs:
Machine-made rugs are very economical as compared to handmade rugs. Just as the name suggests, they are made by machines. The time taken to make machine-made rugs is much less than that spent on handmade rugs due to the standardized and automated processes used to create them. They are also much lighter in weight as compared to handmade rugs. They are less durable but a more economical option for people who can’t afford luxurious handmade designer rugs. Various machine-made rugs are art silk, nylon, acrylic, faux leather, and so on.

2. Based on Material:
A. Wool Rugs
Wool rugs are one of the oldest kinds of rugs. They are best for places with cold weather. Wool rugs are highly durable. They come under the handmade category and are designed in various colors and textures. Wool can be easily combined with other materials like silk and bamboo silk for an even more enchanting appearance.

B. Silk Rugs
Silk rugs are the most expensive handmade rugs. They are extremely attractive in looks as they shine bright on your floor. They are delicate and are only advised to be placed in an area with low footfall.

C. Bamboo Silk Rugs
Bamboo silk, artificial silk, or art silk is used to make handmade and machine-made area rugs. Bamboo silk is also a natural, sustainable fiber. It is much more affordable than real silk. The only difference between natural silk and bamboo silk rugs is brightness. Bamboo silk shines brighter than natural silk, giving an artificial look. The durability of bamboo silk is higher than natural silk and isn't as delicate compared to it.

D. Synthetic Rugs
Synthetic rugs are made of wool mixed with fibers like nylon, acrylic, polypropylene, and polyester. They have low durability compared to handmade rugs but are also economical.

3. Based on Designs:
A. Modern Rugs
Modern area rugs are best suited for contemporary-style decor. Modern rugs keep changing with trends and adorn new patterns every once in a while. It uses a wide range of color schemes to suit every taste. However, the hues remain soothing to the eyes. The style is best suited for living room rugs.

B. Transitional rugs

At the same time, they use colors that are inherent to the modern style. This design makes the best bedroom rugs as it is soothing and fun. This makes transitional rugs an immensely versatile kind of rug with unending possibilities.

C. Classic Rugs

Just as the name suggests, Classic rugs have patterns that have existed since immemorial. The typical motifs and intriguing vintage designs give classic rugs a timeless look. D. Kilim Rugs

Their origin is derived from the countries that were a part of the Persian Empire, including Iran, Turkey, and the Balkans. Apart from being a decor element, Kilim rugs are also used as prayer rugs in many Middle Eastern countries.

E. Unshaped Rugs
Unshaped area rugs have recently become a huge trend, and designers are now freely experimenting with the shapes of rugs. People are bored of rectangular and square-shaped rugs as they have witnessed them for ages. Unshaped rugs add fun to a space and are perfect for people who love experimenting with their decor.
