One of the most important things people look for in their rugs is how plush they feel under their feet. Walking on a smooth rug or squishing your feet on its silken surface is a great feeling. The feel of lushness is as important in a rug as the design and construction. Here, we will help you choose area rugs that feel good under your feet.
Some of the softest materials that can be used in rugs include
Silk is the most premium material in rugs; it is lustrous and smooth. Silk rugs or silk and wool rugs are often the most valuable rugs in the market. These rugs are perfect for your bedrooms and drawing rooms.
Wool has been the most common and classic material used to make rugs for centuries. It is extremely durable, soft, and stain-resistant, making it one of the most preferred choices for those looking for rugs for long-term use and high-traffic areas.
Cotton rugs are among the easiest to maintain and clean. They are long-lasting and can add a great look and texture to your space. Just avoid them in very high-traffic areas; they tend to wear out easily.
The construction quality of the rug also determines its smoothness and feel. Here is a look at the different types of construction that you can opt for when choosing soft and plus rugs
Hand-knotted rugs
By construction, it is the highest quality among handmade rugs. It is made by skilled carpet weavers using ancient techniques, one knot at a time. These carpets are of great quality, and they are masterpieces that you can walk on. These rugs have a flatter pile, and the density of knots per square inch at the back of the carpet defines its quality. A better-quality carpet has more densely packed knots per square inch. A typical Jaipur hand-knotted rug can have upward of two million knots, and it takes anywhere close to six to ten months to make a hand-knotted carpet, depending on the intricacy of the design.
Hand-tufted rug
A hand-tufted carpet starts its journey as a canvas stretched on a frame. It is made using a tufting tool that punches strands of yarn into the canvas with the design traced. The process is not as intensive or time-consuming as that of a hand-knotted carpet and takes relatively less skill. The easiest way of identifying a hand-tufted carpet is by looking for the scrim backing on the reverse. A fringe is added by gluing or sewing it to finish the carpet.
Flatweave
This type of rug does not include knots. The parallel running fibers of a flat weave, called the warp, make up the length of the rug, and those that run along the width (weft) make up the whole surface of the rug.
Handloom Rugs
A shuttle loom is used to create hand-loom rugs. The loom holds the warp(vertical) threads in place and allows interweaving of the weft (horizontal). Hand-loom rugs are generally available in solid colors.
