The Design Story
ulta-pultaUlta-PultaSumitra and Santosh, experienced weavers and sisters-in-law, love weaving unique designs into their rugs. In this particular hand-knotted rug, the duo decided to weave something quite different. Tired of the same patterns, they came up with the idea of weaving some motifs of the rug upside down. The motive behind this was for viewers to spend more time looking at the rug that they have woven with much care and love. Every morning, the duo scatter seeds in their front yard for the sparrows and they love watching the hurried routine of them while weaving. Inspired by this, they have woven multiple sparrow motifs in an upside-down way. They have also woven the sacred earthen pot called "Kalash" to spread the divinity in their rugs. The duo lovingly shared that they want the same divinity to be passed on to the customers of this rug. With such love and a playful manner, they named their rug "Ulta-Pulta," meaning "Upside Down."
