The Design Story

beejane ka kamaal

Beejane Ka Kamaal
“Beejana” is a beautiful hand-crafted fan used by the village locals to calm them from the scorching heat of the summer season. Beejana is the hero of this Manchaha as it caught our weaver’s eyes in the summer waves, which they decided to weave first. As Raju gazed at the fan design, an idea popped up: why not add the cold blowing air of the fan to the rug too? She envisioned the fan pulling the Savan Ke Badal, the much-awaited monsoon clouds that bring relief to their land. This new concept ignited their imagination, and they both forgot about the heat. They wove the wild plants they call Chaangi and Bhudhni in their local language that emerge from the ground when the rain comes. They used colourful wool and silk yarns to decorate their designs. Meena made a dancing peacock on her carpet using the shade of blue. As the carpet neared completion, Meena spotted a greenhouse that could nurture plants during one of her trips despite the weather. This inspired her to weave a greenhouse on the carpet, symbolizing growth no matter the conditions. This Manchaha started from a simple Beejna but ended up with our weavers time traveling into a different world altogether. This is why they call their Manchaha “Beejane Ka Kamaal” (The Wonders of Beejana).
