The Design Story
rango ka surRango Ka SurThis story is about a mother and her children who wove their first "manchaha" rug. Initially, they didn't know anything about weaving a manchaha and were confused. However, they decided to add a border of red and green trees to the rug. Khushi, one of the daughters, had the idea to weave a scene of their village. They started weaving the village scene, including trees, children going to school, a river with a boat, peacocks, and rabbits. However, after visiting their aunt's place and seeing fine carpets, they changed their minds and wanted to add intricate designs to their rug. They started weaving the same elements symbolically so that viewers would not understand directly what they were weaving. For example, raindrops became pointy designs, and a symbolic "Z" pattern reflected the songs they heard on the loom and the little tiffs between the mother and children due to their different tastes in music. The beautiful "leheriya" wavy pattern from Shall's sarees was also woven in. Anshuman, the son, also helped with the weaving and balanced everyone out as the big brother. This carpet is the result of the love and blessings of one family captured in ecstasy.
