The Design Story
bharatBharatBecoming an artist from an artisan, that is the journey every Manchaha weaver takes. Through the Manchaha project, the loom transforms into a canvas of self-expression, and the weaver becomes a true creator. While each Manchaha carries a different story, a few weavers truly realize the depth of this freedom — the value of the empty canvas before them, the knots that become their language, their voice to the world. Mooli Devi, from the village of Aaspura, is one such artist. Mooli understands the worth of her loom and her dreams. She speaks often of her wish to make a name for herself. “Main duniya mein apna naam banana chahti hoon”, and in every knot she ties, there is a quiet determination to do so. Her two daughters look up to her with pride, finding courage in their mother’s journey. It was Mooli’s daughter who gently suggested that her mother should “create history” through her Manchaha, to weave something that honors their nation, their craft, and the countless artisans whose hands shape India’s cultural identity. And so, Mooli decided to weave “Bharat,” the Indian map into her rug. On this vast map, she marks her own home, a small blue dot in Rajasthan, her way of telling the world, “This is where I am.” She dreams of seeing new places and manifests those wishes in her design, highlighting Gujarat and Goa, the places she hopes to visit one day with her daughters. At the top of the rug, she weaves a radiant sun, a symbol of strength and light, representing the collective power of India’s artisan community, who shine quietly through their craft. Her Manchaha is a heartfelt tribute to her country, to her craft, and to every artisan who dares to see themselves as an artist.
