The Design Story
pehela haathPehela HaathThis Manchaha gave Nishu a chance to sit on the loom with her mother, Deepa Devi. She was always fascinated by her mother’s artistry and watched her weave. In this Manchaha, when she got a chance to weave, she added what she liked. She wrote “Happy New Year” and 2025 inside a kite. She also wove the Indian flag and heart-shaped trees, inspired by playing cards. The rug was made around Makar Sankranti, so the kite became an important part of her section. Deepa let her weave freely. She didn’t guide much, just gave her space to explore. Alongside this, Deepa continued her own way of weaving. She filled the rug with trees, flowers, and zig-zag patterns, keeping the base strong and balanced. The rug shows two stages together — a child trying for the first time, and a mother giving her child a chance to explore the art, passing it down to the next generation. Upon finishing the rug, Deepa named the Manchaah ‘Pehela Haath,’ meaning ‘First Hand.’
