Your home deserves more than a standard fit. This guide explores the journey of creating custom rugs, from selecting premium materials like wool and bamboo silk to the traditional craftsmanship of the Katwaris. Discover how our "Design Freeze" process and village updates ensure your custom carpet is a perfect, handcrafted reflection of your personal style and story.
You have a vision for your home that doesn’t exist in a catalog. You’ve seen the mass-produced options, the rugs that sit in thousands of other living rooms, and the “standard” sizes that never quite fit your unique floor plan. But your home isn’t standard. It’s a reflection of your life, your travels, and your taste.
That is where we come in. Think of us as the hands that translate your imagination into wool and silk. When you choose custom rugs, you aren’t just buying a product; you are starting a creative partnership. You provide the soul of the design, and our artisans provide the centuries-old skill to weave it. From the first sketch of a custom rug design to the final knot, the process is entirely about you.
The “Why” Behind Custom Made Carpets
The most common question we get is: “Is it worth the wait?”
In a world of fast furniture, waiting for custom made carpets can feel like a big commitment. But think about the last time you bought a rug “off the shelf.” Was the blue exactly the right shade to match your curtains? Did it sit perfectly under all four legs of your dining chairs? Usually, the answer is “almost.”
With a custom carpet rug, “almost” isn’t in our vocabulary.
-
Eliminating the Compromise: You choose the exact dimensions. If your room needs a 9’7" x 13’2" rug to look balanced, that is exactly what we make.
-
Emotional Connection: There is a different energy in a room when the rug has a story. Whether it’s a pattern inspired by a family heirloom or a contemporary designer rug that matches your favorite piece of art, the connection is personal.
-
Investment in Quality: Unlike machine-made options that use synthetic glues and plastic fibers, custom rugs and carpets are built to last decades, not seasons.

From Sketch to Soul: Our Unique Production Process
We believe the journey of creating a rug is just as beautiful as the finished piece. When you work with us, you aren’t just placing an order; you are entering the heart of Indian weaving heritage. Here is exactly how your ideas become a reality.
Send Us Your Design
It all starts with a spark. You can browse through our library of over 5,000 existing custom rug designs to find a foundation you love, or you can start from a completely blank canvas. Do you have a favorite painting? A sketch on a napkin? A photograph of a landscape that moves you? Share your story with us. Whether it is a bold geometric rug pattern or a delicate, swirling floral rug motif, your idea is our starting point.

The Design Freeze
Once you share your inspiration, a JR Designer will step in as your creative partner. This is a collaborative phase where we finalize the technical details. You will receive a formal technical drawing and a high-fidelity rendering for your approval. This ensures that the scale, the borders, and the placement of every element are exactly as you imagined before a single thread is dyed.

Carding & Spinning: The Touch of the Katwaris
This is where the physical journey begins. Our carefully selected wool is handed over to the Katwaris, master artisans who have spent their lives perfecting the art of preparation. They layer the strands together, meticulously removing dirt and knots by hand.
Then comes the magic of the Charka. Using this traditional spinning wheel, the Katwaris channel centuries of Indian tradition to turn raw wool into high-quality yarn. This hand-spinning process gives the yarn a unique texture and strength that machine-spinning simply cannot replicate. It is the reason our wool rugs have such incredible depth and “bounce.”

Updates From The Village
We don’t believe in “black box” manufacturing. As your rug is being woven, we stay in touch. You will receive updates directly from the village where your rug is coming to life. You’ll learn about the specific artisans weaving your story and get a glimpse into the community pouring its skill into your custom carpet. This connection turns your rug into a living piece of history.

Materials: The Building Blocks of Your Vision
When you are the designer, you get to choose the “ingredients.” The material you pick defines how the rug feels under your feet on a cold morning.
Custom Wool Carpet: The Timeless Foundation
A custom wool carpet is resilient, soft, and naturally flame-retardant. It contains lanolin, a natural oil that acts as a barrier against spills. If you have a high-traffic living room, wool is the gold standard.

The Shimmer of Bamboo Silk and Viscose
For those who want their floors to catch the light, we often recommend blending wool with silk alternatives. Wool and bamboo silk rugs offer a stunning contrast between matte and gloss. If you want a high-end, editorial look, viscose rugs provide a velvet-like sheen that looks incredible in master bedrooms.

Construction: Hand Knotted vs. Hand Tufted
How we make the rug depends on the look you want to achieve.
-
Hand Knotted Rugs: These are the ultimate heirlooms. Each knot is tied by hand. If you want a hand knotted masterpiece, you are investing in a rug that can last for generations.

-
Hand Tufted Rugs: Perfect for modern, graphic designs. Hand tufted rugs allow for incredible texture and varying pile heights, making them ideal for contemporary spaces.
Buying Tips: Measuring for Success
The biggest advantage of custom rugs is getting the size right.
-
The Living Room: Aim for a rug size that allows all furniture legs to be on the rug. It anchors the room and makes the space feel grand.

-
The Dining Room: You need enough rug so that when chairs are pulled out, the legs stay on the carpet. Usually, this means custom carpets that are 24-30 inches wider than the table on all sides.
-
Color Check: If you are looking for specific blue rugs, remember to check your yarn samples (poms) in both natural daylight and warm evening light.

The Human Element: Why It Matters
In an age of automation, there is something radical about a hand-made rug. When you run your hand across your new custom carpet rug, you are feeling the work of the Katwaris and the weavers. Those subtle variations in color, known as “abrash,” are not flaws; they are the signature of a human hand.

By choosing custom made carpets, you are keeping a heritage craft alive. You are ensuring that the art of the Charka and the skill of the village weaver continue to thrive.
Your rug isn’t just a decoration; it’s a celebration of human potential.

Final Thoughts: Your Floor, Your Story
A rug is the foundation of your home’s story. It’s where your kids will play and where you’ll host your most important gatherings. Why would you want that foundation to be a compromise?
Choosing custom rugs and carpets is an act of self-expression. It’s about refusing to fit into a “standard” box and deciding that your environment should be as unique as you are.
You bring the vision. We bring our hands. Let’s make something beautiful together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which material is best for high-traffic areas like a hallway or living room?
For durability, a custom wool carpet is the superior choice. Wool fibers have a natural "crimp" that allows them to bounce back after being stepped on. If you want a touch of luxury in these areas, we recommend wool and bamboo silk rugs, where the wool provides the strength and the silk adds a subtle shimmer to the pattern.
Can I choose different pile heights for my custom rug design?
Yes. This is especially popular in hand tufted rugs. You can choose a "high-low" effect, where certain parts of your custom rug designs, such as a geometric border or floral petals, are carved higher than the base. This adds a tactile, 3D dimension to your floor.
What is the difference between Hand-Knotted and Hand-Tufted in terms of feel?
Hand-knotted rugs are thinner but much denser and more flexible, feeling like a heavy fabric. Hand-tufted rugs are generally thicker and more "cushioned" because they have a protective canvas backing. Your choice depends on whether you want a heritage heirloom or a plush, modern feel.
How do I ensure the colors in my "Design Freeze" look the same in my room?
Colors can shift depending on your home’s lighting. This is why we provide "poms", physical yarn samples. We always suggest placing these poms on your floor at different times of the day to see how the black rugs or neutral tones react to both morning sun and evening lamps.
Are your custom wool rugs suitable for homes with pets or children?
Absolutely. Because the Katwaris hand-process the wool to remove dirt and knots, and because wool contains natural lanolin, our custom made carpets are inherently stain-resistant. They don't trap allergens like synthetic carpets do, making them a healthier choice for your family.
Can I customize a "Round Rug" or an irregular shape?
Yes. Since we start from a technical drawing during the Design Freeze, we can create any silhouette. Whether you need a round rug for a foyer or a rug in a specific shape to fit a unique architectural nook, your designer rugs will be cut and bound to your exact floor plan.
