Celebrating International Women's Day 2025 with Jaipur Rugs Leading Female Artisans

This Women's Day, don't just celebrate—stand with them. Help us bring more value to this majestic form of art and comfort crafted by the nation's most inspirational females. So, to honor the beauty of their undying resilience, today, we will learn about three exceptional female artisans of Jaipur Rugs and their incredible journey. Scroll down to read their stories and be part of a movement where every rug is an ode to strength, courage, and limitless creativity.

In the heart of India, where tradition and craftsmanship intertwine, a quiet revolution is taking place—one woven knot at a time. For centuries, women in rural India have been bound by societal norms, their voices often silenced, their dreams left unspoken. Yet, within these very constraints, extraordinary resilience and creativity have flourished. This Women's Day 2025, we celebrate the most significant artisan force of Jaipur Rugs— our females, who have defied odds, challenged conventions, and transformed their lives through the art of weaving.

From the remote villages of Rajasthan, where the hum of the loom now echoes stories of empowerment, to the grand global stage, where their designer rugs are celebrated as masterpieces. Our artisans have preserved an ancient craft and paved the way for a new era of female independence.

Through the inspiring journeys of Dhafali Devi, Manju Devi, and Sundari Devi, let's uncover how Jaipur Rugs has become a symbol of evolution—offering women a livelihood and a platform for self-expression, sustainability, and cultural preservation.

Woven Dreams: The Story of Dhafali Devi

Hailing from Aaspura, Rajasthan, Dhafali Devi has spent over 32 years mastering her craft. Her journey took a transformative turn 14 years ago when she joined Jaipur Rugs, gaining stability and global recognition. Through Manchaha Rugs, she discovered her artistic voice, infusing her weaves with innovation and personal expression. Despite no formal training, Dhafali's talent earned her two international design awards—the European Product Design Award and the IF Design Award for her hand knotted rug "Ujjwal." Her work has been showcased at Red Fort's Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design and beyond. Now, she pioneers 3D rug weaving, with a national award within reach. Once struggling with delayed wages and mediators, she now mentors artisans, preserving India's weaving traditions. "Jaipur Rugs gave me stability and a platform to grow," she says, proving that passion and perseverance can turn threads into triumphs.

Dhafali Devi's Rug Story

"Ujjwal"—Splendent

Dhafali Devi's abstract rug is a heartfelt expression of love, tradition, and everyday life. The Leheriya pattern, a symbol of Rajasthan's heritage, forms the base. At the same time, whimsical personal elements are woven in—her father-in-law's spectacles, her child's Rubik's cube, turnips from her kitchen, and fluttering butterflies. Each motif tells a story, turning the area rug into a canvas of her world. Even in her bustling household of six, weaving is a family affair. Her husband, Bheruram, once unfamiliar with the craft, discovered his creative side while working on this project. Their greatest pride? Educating their children, with their eldest now a government school teacher. "Jaipur Rugs gave me not just a platform but also the chance to weave at the historic Red Fort," says Dhafali, reflecting on a journey that transformed her artistry—and her life.

Manju Devi: Weaving Her World, One Knot at a Time

In the quiet village of Hanutpura, Rajasthan, Manju Devi once sat staring at bundles of yarn, too nervous to begin. For ten days, she hesitated—until a simple piece of advice changed everything:

"It's your own Manchaha. Just weave what you see around you."

So, she did. With every knot, she wove glimpses of her life—the warm glow of the chulha (traditional clay stove), the hand-painted walls of her home, and intricate floor patterns made from cow dung to cool the earth. Her laborer husband stood beside her, learning the craft and supporting her dream.

Their journey together was magical. But fate had other plans. Manju lost her husband two years ago, and grief forced her to step away from the loom. Yet, the loom still waits—just like the world—for the day she returns, ready to weave again.

Manju Devi's Rug Story

"Aas Paas"—Around Me

This colorful rug tells a story of resilience, beauty, and everyday life. Despite having no formal training, Manju Devi's design won prestigious awards like the IDA Design Award, Dezeen Award, Kyoorius Design Award, and BW Future of Design Award. But more than accolades, Aas Paas from our Manchaha collection is living proof of her ability to turn life's simplest moments into majestic art.

Jaipur Rugs didn't just give Manju a job; it gave her a voice. Through her rugs, she tells untold stories—of strength, loss, and an undying love for the world around her.

Sundari Devi: The Weaver of Strength and Survival

Sundari Devi's life has been one of sacrifice. As a child, she cared for her siblings while her father worked tirelessly. Marriage brought no relief—only more struggles. Weaving, at first, was a means of survival. But Jaipur Rugs became her escape, her power, and her undying voice.

Manchaha initiative allowed her to pour her emotions into the loom, creating designs that spoke louder than words. Her art won her the Carpet Design Award—twice!

Then, the pandemic struck. Amidst the chaos of COVID-19, she lost her husband. Many expected her to put down the loom forever. Instead, she turned her grief into inspiration. She wove through the pain, stitching her hopes, struggles, and resilience into every luxury rug. Today, Sundari Devi isn't just an artisan—she's an icon of resilience. A woman who turned hardship into art, and art into a legacy.

Sundari Devi's Rug Design Story

"Hamare Jeevan Ki Roti"—The Bread of Life.

With every knot, Sundari weaves a farmer's journey—the tiny seeds planted in spring, the fields blooming with life, the golden harvest after the rains. She knotted stacks of Bajra (millets), ready to feed families, while tiny ants carried away their share—a reminder that every living being fights for survival. Her living room rug is more than just art; it's a tribute to the unsung heroes who feed the world. "Annadata"—The Givers of Food.

Empowering Women, One Knot at a Time

Jaipur Rugs is more than a company—it's a movement. It has become a global leader in luxury handmade rugs by embracing traditional hand-weaving techniques and merging them with modern design. But its greatest achievement? Empowering women like Dhafali, Manju, and Sundari.

In rural India, women were once confined to household chores, financially dependent, and unheard. Jaipur Rugs changed that. It has transformed thousands of lives by providing direct market access, fair wages, and creative freedom.

  • Economic Independence: Women no longer rely on middlemen. Their work is recognized, valued, and compensated fairly.

  • Creative Expression: Manchaha Rugs gives them a blank canvas, allowing them to weave their stories, emotions, and experiences into every rug.

  • Global Recognition: Their art isn't just confined to village homes—it adorns palaces, luxury hotels, and international exhibitions.

  • Sustainability & Cultural Preservation: Each hand tufted rug is a piece of heritage, crafted with age-old techniques that promote sustainable, slow fashion.
