From neutral abstract carpets to geometric area rugs, these creations can hold their own and then some, in all manner of design sensibilities
Want to change up your living space (or any part of your home) sans incurring the expense of remodeling or the headache of tiresome DIY projects? Buy a rug. Or even two. It’s the one decor element that can make a big impact on your space. The right rug can transform the decor from blah to wow, holding the room together and adding color, patterns, and warmth.
1. Neutral abstract rugs - Genesis
A hand-tufted, wool and viscose abstract rug as shown here can be perfect for a contemporary living room space. Carpets with neutral palettes are great for any type of decor, from modern to eclectic spaces. Not only can they add a touch of whimsy and a dash of colour to a minimalist decor style, they can also balance out the vibrancy in a colour-filled, highly accessorised room.

This ivory and blue rug is also available in a plethora of colours.
Genesis has a soft texture and a subtle colour palette.
Tip: Rugs that are too dark show up dust and debris much more easily; dark-hued rugs are also best avoided in spaces that are directly impacted by natural light as they are likely to fade faster.
2. Distressed handmade carpets - Tattvam
Rugs with soft colors can be a great addition to spaces that have a lot going on. In this room, the brown of the wall paneling and the laminated floor is offset by the blue and grey tones of the sofa and the blue handloom carpet with an abstract design. These modern rugs are great for anchoring the living room seating area, and can also be a luxurious addition under your bed.

Available from 2x3 ft to 10x14 ft, Tattvam is a hand knotted, wool and bamboo creation
Tip: A small-sized rug makes for a great accent piece and can be used for casual placements - as a coffee table rug or as a carpet under the dining table. One can also place it in the staircase landing area or in reading nooks.
3. Geometrie area rugs - Jaipur Wunderkammer
There is nothing like a geometric area rug to add depth to a room’s decor. In this bedroom, a 4x4 ft cream and green area rug has been placed in a manner that accentuates the other quadrilateral elements in the room.

This rug (Jaipur Wunderkammer) has been inspired by the small
window punctures of ancient Rajasthani forts.
There is much to choose from when it comes to geometric rugs. From chevron patterns, stripes, and circular and rectangular solids to 3d rugs, these carpets can find pride of place in any area that you would want to highlight. If you are toying with the idea of adding color but don’t want an all-out colorful rug, interesting geometric patterns in maroon, green, or blue on a neutral background are the way to go. These rugs have a way of attracting attention in a subtle but determined fashion and work well indoors or outdoors (say on the patio or in a cabana).

4. Abstract modern carpets - Project error by Kavi
This award-winning, vibrant contemporary rug design can bind many colors around it and present them as a cohesive palette. Add it as an accent to the living room floor or showcase it in front of the bed or as a framed tapestry on the wall, this range of carpets proves why rugs are art.

This rug (Project error by Kavi) is made of hand-processed wool and bamboo silk.
Each rug uses the skills of 180 artisans skills to take shape.
5. Vintage and antique rugs - Vintage
Who doesn’t loves the look of vintage rugs? They’ve stood the test of time, and today the classic patterns updated in modern materials are making these versatile, performance-focused rugs affordable to most. If you are looking to transform your space with just that one perfect item, look to a vintage style rug in vibrant colors for a striking statement, or one in subdued hues but equally beautiful intricate designs for a lowkey but no less powerful look.
The classic pattern on this amber-colored rug sporting a contrasting border in beige adds color and design to a space clad in somber tones. We can see this rug taking center stage as much in a contemporary living space as in an eclectic room.

If you’re looking to infuse your space with vibrant colors, these types of rugs are right for you.
6. All natural, hand made carpets - Abrash
Natural-toned rugs don’t have to be boring. They are the ideal foundation on which to build your color scheme; you could also add them to your space as evergreen vogue accent pieces.

This flat woven rug (Abrash) in jute and hemp is a minimalist’s dream that would look
equally lovely in a living room, verandah or dining room.
Perfect for Scandinavian, boho, coastal, and traditional interior themes, these rugs in muted hues and uncomplicated design patterns make a low-profile yet powerful decorative statement in all their simplicity.
No matter what kind of rug you choose, remember they are long-term investments; so, it makes perfect sense to go with a type that transcends styles and spaces.
