The Design Story
sajhedariSajhedariChaina and her mother, Santosh Devi, are used to working together on the same loom. In this rug, Santosh began weaving alone and could not decide on what to weave. The bottom part is hers, which is steady and simple. She worked without planning much, just setting the base. The shift came when Chaina joined her. From that point, the rug started to change. They began dividing the surface into diagonal sections. Each section was filled with different motifs — some tight, some open, some more detailed than others. The rug slowly became more active. Santosh says they rarely discuss the design. Still, they understand each other while weaving. She also says she prefers working with her daughter. For her, weaving alone feels incomplete. This rug shows that movement, from one person to two, from a plain start to a fuller composition built together. Together, they named the rug ‘Sajhedari,’ meaning ‘Partnership.’
