swedish, sweden (c.1837)An antique Swedish Agadyna textile, dated 1837, presents a dark inky sea field enlivened by vivid desert rose floral medallions. The design centers on bold blossoms framed within diamond outlines, surrounded by smaller flowers that enhance its rhythmic symmetry. The composition is enclosed by a striking border of geometric diamond bands, worked in rich tones of blue and brown, adding both structure and contrast. Typical of Agadyna weaving, the piece combines large floral motifs, bold colors, and alphabeta and numerics with features that link it to Swedish folk tradition where textiles carried both decorative and cultural meaning.
