Layering a rug over your carpet can go a long way in enhancing the space and bringing it closer to your vision of how your home should look and feel.
Homeowners and interior designers rely on rugs to add character, style, and color to a room. They are highly appealing, offer a burst color, interesting textures that add dimension, and eye-catching prints that can jazz up any space. And while area rugs are usually laid on wood, concrete, and tile flooring, they also make for great layers even if you have floor-to-floor carpets. While the idea may seem counterintuitive at first, it is a fantastic way to cover up any unsalvageable stains, or irreparable tears on the carpet, or when you simply want flooring more elegant than just a monotone carpet. You can also protect the wood floor with area rugs in areas where the carpet is torn. If you are still on the fence about why you should layer a rug over your carpet, allow us to change your mind.
Layering a rug over your carpet can go a long way in enhancing the space and bringing it closer to your vision of how your home should look and feel. Plus, some extra underfoot comfort never hurt anybody, right? However, choosing the right area rugs for layering is key here.

-
If you already have beautiful wall-to-wall carpeting, consider area rugs as something that will only elevate its appearance. A carpeted floor is simply a textured floor, and its main purpose is function and practicality. However, area rugs, which are works of art in their own right, are your way to add a distinct aesthetic to your room. They set the style and the tone for the space, and as all rugs do, anchor the room and bring all the elements together. You can explore hundreds of different styles of rugs online and opt for one that is the closest to your personality and preferences.
-
One of the most important factors to consider while buying rugs for sale for your carpeted floor is the color. Don’t pretend like the carpet doesn’t exist when you’re layering it with an area rug. Instead, consider the carpet’s color scheme to select a rug that perfectly complements it. Doing this will maintain the harmony of the room and the right-coloured handmade rugs can also help tie the floor into the room’s color scheme. Bring the carpeted floor to life by resorting to interesting contrasts in color and texture. For instance, if you have a basic, neutral beige carpet, opt for a different texture like jute, sisal, silk, etc, in graphic area rugs.

-
Which brings us to the next point, which is patterns. One of the biggest reasons to layer area rugs on a carpeted floor is the pattern. So, you want to make sure you get it right. Choose a patterned rug that complements the existing color scheme and make sure the pattern is in harmony with the existing ones in the room. One of the easiest ways to introduce patterned rugs to your decor is by opting for a two-toned, flatweave striped rug. Also, avoid layering a patterned rug over a patterned carpet; it runs the risk of looking too busy and not-so-soothing to the eye.
-
When layering rugs over a carpeted floor, play with the size of the rugs. When choosing the size and shape of area rugs, take the size of the room and its furniture placement into consideration. If you want to distinguish and partition different areas in your room, consider two or three complementary rugs in different sizes and shapes. However, if you wish to cover as much of the carpet as possible, opt for a grand-sized area rug. If your room is dominated by rectangles, introducing different shapes in the form of oval, round rugs, or even irregular rugs will help create drama.
-
Last but not least, just because you are placing your rug over a carpet, doesn’t mean you break off the partnership of a rug with a rug pad. You should look for rugs that are made specifically for use over carpets, often referred to as carpet-to-carpet pads. This will prevent your beautiful new area rugs from shifting and rippling over the carpet so you don’t have to keep rolling the bump out of area rugs. They also prevent damage to the carpet underneath. Alternatively, you can also go for a double-sided carpet tape to combat creeping.

So, don’t think twice before adding a rug over your wall-to-wall carpet flooring. It is one of the easiest means to the end of having a space that is reflective of your personality.
