The maintenance and care of handmade carpets is quite an art, and it can get complicated if not done correctly. Fast cleaning may not give enough time to the cleaner to collect all the dust.
A carpet is a luxurious home accessory that can instantly uplift the look of any space. From reducing noise and adding comfort under your feet, to changing the look and feel of a space, they can be used in countless ways. Because of their prices, carpets are often seen as long-time investments.
Investments remain worthy only when they are kept maintained. Similarly, carpets also require regular care and maintenance so that they stay in good condition and last for a long time. Proper care is even more important for handmade carpets and custom rugs that are woven with great time and effort. They can be cherished for years and even for decades if they get regular care and maintenance.
The maintenance and care of handmade carpets is quite an art, and it can get complicated if not done correctly. So if you want to ace this art, here are some tips that you can follow:
Clean up regularly:
Handmade carpets attract quite a lot of dust. Because of their dense construction, dust often gets trapped inside them. Regular vacuuming can prevent dust from accumulating in the yarns of your carpet. Aim to vacuum your carpet at least twice a week to ensure that it always looks as good as new.
Vacuuming correctly is important to ensure proper cleaning without causing any damage to the carpet. For the best results, move the vacuum cleaner back and forth slowly, to ensure deep cleaning. Fast cleaning may not give enough time to the cleaner to collect all the dust. Discuss with your carpet seller about suitable vacuum cleaners for your carpets. Make sure that your vacuum cleaner’s dust bag is not full to ensure it works with full efficiency.
For cleaning corners and edges of area rugs, consider using vacuum heads that are specially designed to clean hard-to-reach corners.

Shake it once a week:
Even after vacuum cleaning, some stubborn dust particles get trapped at the core of your handmade carpets. You can use the traditional practice of shaking it to get rid of these pollutants. This strenuous process demands large space so it might be more suitable for area rugs than big carpets. It is a very suitable method to clean the backside of your rugs.
Be ready for stains:
Stains are the biggest danger to your handmade carpets. We can’t really stop spilling on carpet completely but being active at such times helps. Keep a towel handy to clean spots in these situations and make sure not to rub them. Knowing the cleaning instructions of your carpet is also necessary to take the right action. There are multiple rug cleaning liquids available in the market to assist customers in spot cleaning. You can also try to make a ‘no food zone’ near your carpets for preventing spilling issues to happen.
Install rug pads:
Area rugs undergo a lot of foot pressure daily. A rug pad absorbs this pressure that eventually minimizes the daily wear and tear of your custom rugs. It acts as a protective barrier between the floor and the rug to prevent friction. That's why make sure to install a suitable rug pad under all area rugs of your house.
Don’t forget about furniture marks:
Heavy furniture feet may create an ugly depression on your handmade carpets. This is caused by continuous pressure exerted by the furniture on the pile of your carpet. To avoid this issue, make sure to rearrange the furniture or rotate the carpet from time to time. If you don’t want to put these extra efforts, consider installing furniture coasters. These will reduce the pressure of furniture by spreading out the heavyweight.
Trim the extra threads:
Sharp nails and edgy furniture can loosen some carpet knots of your handmade carpet. These loosened knots can destroy the premium appearance of your carpet. That’s why occasional trimming is recommended to cut these threads. For this, get on your knees and take a closer look of your carpet. If you see any loosened threads, trim them with a scissor instead of pulling them out. This will maintain the finishing of your carpet.
Get a professional carpet cleaning:
Even after regular vacuum cleaning, sending carpets for a professional cleaning is an absolute must. Your carpet serves high traffic areas due to which dust and pollutants become ingrained inside it. A professional carpet cleaning is necessary at least once a year for an extended lifespan of your carpet. It is also necessary from a health perspective as an uncleaned carpet can cause bacterial growth inside it. Make sure to contact a professional carpet cleaner to avoid any possible damage and poor services.

Avoid the sunlight:
Any carpet is likely to be fade if exposed to direct sunlight. The harmful UV rays from the Sun penetrate deep into your carpet leading to color fading over time. Use windows coverings like curtains or adhesive layers to block these harmful UV rays. Also, try to keep your carpet away from direct sunlight to avoid this issue. If a corner of your carpet is receiving direct sunlight, give it a periodic rotation to maintain uniform hues.
Have a no-shoe policy:
A no-shoe policy in your home can help maintain the look of your carpet. The hard surface of shoes can slowly damage the soft fibers of your carpets. No shoe habit will save your carpet from outside dirt and repetitive cleaning. You can also install a doormat at the entrance to restrain the incoming dirt.
All these tips focus on keeping your handmade carpets tidy. Maintaining the look of your carpet is not easy but with regular efforts and the right steps, it is surely achievable.
