The Design Story
tarangTarangLaada Devi began this rug as a way of teaching her daughter, Payal, the art of weaving, and slowly it became a shared surface of learning between mother and daughter. As Payal wove beside her, the rug filled with familiar forms of their everyday lives—shakkarpara (Indian sweet snacks), flowers, butterflies, and patterns borrowed from floor coverings. Laada Devi’s zigzag pattern flows like water across the rug, recalling the memory of monsoon rains in a land that waits for them. These lines feel like the bond between a mother and daughter - flowy, deep, and united. The repeated patterns of this rug behave like ripples in which one lesson passes from mother to daughter, expanding outward. This rug holds water not as an image, but as a feeling. Upon finishing the carpet, the daughter named it “Tarang,” meaning “Ripple.”
