The Design Story
tedhe baakeTedhe BaakeManju Devi lives in a quieter, less exposed part of Aaspura village. Aaspura is often called a Manchaha village—almost every second home has a loom where Manchaha carpets are woven. Most artisans visit one another, observe each other’s work, exchange ideas, and draw inspiration from this shared environment. Manju, however, lives slightly away from this cluster. Because of this distance, she does not see the many Manchaha carpets being woven around the village, nor does she frequently visit other weavers’ homes. Her inspiration comes from within and from her immediate surroundings. As a result, her design language stands distinctly apart from that of the rest of the village. In Tedhe Baake, Manju weaves sand dunes marked by organic, flowing lines. The landscape around her home is rich with sand, scattered with stones of many colors. Named "Tedhe Baake," meaning crooked and winding, the Manchaha reflects Manju Devi’s independent way of seeing, and where inspiration grows quietly, without influence, from the land she inhabits.
