The Design Story
gulabiGulabiSantosh Devi and Sushila Devi began this rug with the memory of a saree. They took inspiration from its borders, the small buti motifs, and the way different shades sit together in the fabric. Those details slowly became the starting point of the design. They wove this rug during the winter and the approaching Makar Sankranti festival. As they worked, the festival naturally entered the carpet. Small and large kite shapes began appearing across the surface. In the lower half of the rug, the colours and movement feel like a sky filled with kites during the festival. Towards the end, the rug changes slightly. The soft pink shades reminded Santosh Devi of a visit to Jaipur. Holding on to that memory, she tried weaving the windows of Hawa Mahal in her own way. The rug moves through different memories and moments, but all of them feel connected to celebration, colour, and things that stayed with them. In the end, they named the rug “Gulabi,” inspired by their favourite colour and their memories of Jaipur.
