The Design Story
bagiyaBagiyaSantosh Devi's Manchahas are always inspired by the life she lives every day. Rather than following a fixed plan, she fills her rugs with moments and places that are familiar to her. She began this Manchaha by weaving small flying birds near the bottom, followed by flowing water waves. As the rug grew, she introduced a pattern inspired by her favourite shawl, bringing a personal memory into the design. In the middle, Santosh Devi wove different millet fields, reflecting the farms around her village. On the top left side, she added flowers and plant motifs inspired by her own garden, where she spends much of her time. The rug is filled with different textures and horizontal bands, each representing a different part of her surroundings. Like many of Santosh Devi's creations, this Manchaha is a portrait of her everyday life. It brings together her fields, her garden, flowing water, birds, and cherished memories into one woven landscape. She named this Manchaha “Bagiya” as a tribute to her garden.
