The Design Story
toranToranIn an Indian household, everything has a reason behind it. Indians decorate their door with “Bandarwal” or “Toran” which is traditionally used to attract the divine energy of Goddess Lakshmi. And if you look closely, “Toran” is nothing but a piece of art. Soniya and Bimla took this simple decorative element as their muse and weaved it on top of their Manchaha rug. The carpet is thus named “Toran” by the ladies. The lady weavers received a bunch of bright coloured yarns and utilized them wisely to create intricate designs on the carpet. They also took inspiration from another decorative element of a house - the railing at the front yard of a nearby house - and weaved it beautifully on the rug. Apart from these, there are plenty more elements like butterflies, maps, earrings, chai cups, mountains etc. Using their skills, the artisans have filled most spaces with random lines and boxes keeping the carpet filled. Soniya and Bimla have proved how observing the world keenly can open windows of creation.
