The Design Story
shiraz (c.1920)The field of this antique Shiraz rug, woven circa 1920 in the village of Shivran, displays an allover lattice of mother-and-child boteh motifs, where a smaller boteh nestles within a larger form, symbolizing fertility, protection, and continuity of life. Set against an antique white ground, the botehs unfold in shades of indigo blue, terracotta, and camel, with scattered rosettes adding movement and delicacy to the composition. The main border, in deep indigo, carries a sequence of stylized shrubs and geometric rosettes, flanked by narrow guard stripes with repeating diamonds. This interplay of rich blues and warm reds frames the pale field with a sense of balance and strength. In its elongated 7 x 14'6 proportions, this rug stands as a fine example of Shivran village weaving in Shiraz, where tribal artistry meets symbolic boteh iconography and a refined harmony of color.
