The Design Story
india (c.1950-70)Antique Indian Dhurrie, 8 x 13 ft, Circa 1950–70 This antique features a brilliantly rhythmic field of nested diamonds in a stepped lattice arrangement. The primary palette includes vivid red, offset by accents of medium blue, saffron, and ivory, giving the composition an optical vibration that emphasizes the weaver’s mastery of tonal geometry. Each diamond appears almost pixelated in form, a nod to both tribal precision and modern abstraction. The surrounding border in bold red frames the piece with a continuous Greek key motif, articulated in contrasting medium blue and ivory. This structured edge provides architectural weight to the otherwise kinetic center. Woven in India, the dhurrie reflects the regional weaving traditions of mid-century village workshops, where color and form are both deliberate and expressive.
